George B. McClellan

George Brinton McClellan Jr. (born November 23, 1865 in Dresden , Saxony , †  November 30, 1940 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1903 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives ; from 1904 to 1909 he was Mayor of New York City .

Career

George McClellan was the son of the general of the same name, presidential candidate from 1864 and governor of New Jersey , George B. McClellan (1826-1885). He was born on November 23, 1865 in Dresden, where his parents were visiting. He attended St. John's School in Sing Sing . In 1886 he graduated from Princeton College . In the following years he worked as a journalist in New York City. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1892, he began to work there in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1889 and 1893 he was responsible for the finances of the Brooklyn Bridge Company as Treasurer . In 1893 and 1894 he was chairman of the New York City Council . Between 1890 and 1903 he took part as a delegate at all regional Democratic Party Conventions for New York State and New York City.

In the congressional elections of 1894 McClellan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of New York , where he succeeded William Bourke Cockran on March 4, 1895 . After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on December 21, 1903 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In Congress, he was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means .

McClellan's resignation came after he was elected mayor of New York City to succeed Seth Low . He held this office between 1904 and 1909. During this period, the shipwreck in New York harbor on June 15, 1904 with the paddle steamer General Slocum , killed 1,021 people. McClellan also lectured at universities on public affairs at the time. In 1912 he became professor of economic history at Princeton University . During the First World War he was an officer in the United States Army between 1917 and 1919 . He rose from major in the Ordnance Department to lieutenant colonel . After that he was colonel of the reserve there. After the war, he returned to Princeton. George McClellan died in Washington on November 30, 1940 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
