Abraham G. Lansing

Abraham Gerritse Lansing (born December 12, 1756 in Albany , New York Province, † May 15, 1834 in Albany, New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . He was Treasurer of State of New York from 1803 to 1808 and from 1810 to 1812 .

Life

Abraham Gerritse Lansing, son of Jane Waters (1728-1810) and Gerrit Jacobse Lansing (* 1711), was born during the reign of King George II in Albany County and grew up there. Nothing is known about his youth. On April 9, 1779, he married Susanna Yates (1762-1840) in Albany, daughter of Abraham Yates . The couple had 13 children together. Yates served from 1787 to 1808 as a guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Albany County. During this time he held the post of Treasurer of State of New York from 1803 to 1808 and then from 1810 to 1812. Lansing died in Albany in 1834 and was then buried in the Rural Cemetery in Menands, New York.

He lived in a house which his father-in-law had built and which is now at 358 North Market Street in Albany.

The Chancellor John Lansing was his brother. The congressman Gerrit Y. Lansing was his son. His daughter Susan Lansing (1804–1874) was the second wife of Senator Peter Gansevoort (1788–1876). His grandson Abraham Lansing (1835-1899) was 1874 Acting Treasurer of State of New York.
