Abraham Yates
Abraham Yates (born August 23, 1724 in Albany , New York Province, † June 30, 1796 in Albany, New York ) was an American lawyer and politician .
Career
Abraham Yates, son of Catelyntje Winne and Christoffel Yates, was born and raised in Albany County during the reign of King George I. He was baptized in Albany on August 23, 1724. Yates finished his preparatory studies. He was then from 1755 to 1759 sheriff in Albany County. He also decided to pursue a political career. Yates was a delegate to the New York Provincial Congress from 1775 to 1777 . During this time he acted on November 2, 1775 and August 10, 1776 as President pro Tempore and on August 28, 1776 as President. Yates was a member of the Council of Appointment in 1777 and the first and second Council of Safety from May 3, 1777 to January 7, 1778. He sat from 1778 to 1790 in the New York Senate . During this time he was also active as the bankruptcy administrator of Albany from 1778 to 1779. He was then Albany's first postmaster in 1783 . He then sat in the Continental Congress in 1787 and 1788 , before serving as Mayor of Albany from 1790 to 1796.
Yates died in Albany in 1796 and was buried in the local Rural Cemetery .

His grandchildren were the judge of the New York Court of Chancery , John Lansing and the State Treasurer (Finance Minister) of New York State, Abraham G. Lansing .
