Abraham Lansing (born February 27, 1835 in Albany , New York , † October 4, 1899 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was Treasurer of State of New York in 1874 .

Career

Abraham Lansing, son of Caroline Mary Thomas (1805–1845) and Christopher Yates Lansing (1796–1872), was born in Albany County in 1835 . New York's Treasurer of State Abraham G. Lansing was his grandfather, the chancellor John Lansing was his great-uncle, and Gerrit Y. Lansing was his uncle. Lansing attended the Albany Academy . His youth was overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the Mexican-American War in the following years . In 1855 he graduated from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts . Lansing was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity . He studied law with his father. In 1857 he graduated from Albany Law School . He later practiced with his brother William in a joint law firm. The following years were overshadowed by the civil war.

In 1868 he was appointed City Attorney in Albany. Lansing became the first New York Supreme Court reporter in 1869 . He published the first seven volumes of the Supreme Court Reports.

On November 26, 1873, he married Catherine Gansevoort (1838-1918), granddaughter of Peter Gansevoort and Nathan Sanford .

The governor of New York John Adams Dix appointed Lansing in 1874 as Acting Treasurer of State of New York, as the acting Treasurer Thomas Raines suffered a nervous breakdown and unable to exercise his office was. He was sent to the Utica State Asylum for treatment . Lansing held the post from June 1 to August 19, 1874.

In 1876, Lansing was elected Albany Corporation Counsel. He served in the New York Senate for the 17th District in 1882 and 1883 . During this time he campaigned for the establishment of the State Railroad Commission and the Niagara Falls State Park .

Lansing was director of the National Commercial Bank, trustee of Albany Savings Bank, Park Commissioner in Albany, Governor of Albany Hospital, Trustee of the Albany Academy, the Albany Medical College , the Albany Rural Cemetery and the Dudley Observatory . In 1879 he took part as an American delegate at the international conference in London for the purpose of establishing the rights of nation states.

He died in Albany in 1889 and was then buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, New York.
