William B. Lewis
William B. Lewis (1816 - October 15, 1884 in Brooklyn , New York ) was an American businessman and politician . He was New York's Treasurer of State from 1862 to 1863 .
Career
Nothing is known about the youth of William B. Lewis. He started his working life as a Brick Hod Carrier. In the following years he learned the building trade and then worked as a general contractor . In the 1850s he held the post of City Comptroller in the then still independent city of Brooklyn. During the Civil War he was Treasurer of State of New York from 1862 to 1863. He was nominated by the Republican Party and the War Democrats . After the end of the civil war, he withdrew from politics. He became secretary and cashier on the Brooklyn City Railroad, and held these posts until his sudden death when he collapsed on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. He drew some time before his death, according to Plainfield ( New Jersey ), but commuted every day to Brooklyn to work.
