Career

Nothing is known about Benjamin Welch junior's youth. He studied law with Richter Mann in Utica, New York. He then first published the Utica Democrat and then the Buffalo Republican in Buffalo, New York. At that time he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1849 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of Treasurer of State of New York. He suffered a defeat to Whig / Anti-Rent War candidate Alvah Hunt . In 1851 he ran again for the office of Treasurer of State of New York. The Whig James M. Cookwon the election by 228 votes. Cook received 200,693 votes and Welch received 200,465. As a result, Welch successfully challenged Cook's election on the following basis: the ballots for B. Welch, Benjamin Welch (excluding Jr. ), and Benjamin C. Welch, Jr. (with the mistaken middle initial) were all cast for him, but not counted in his favor. On November 20, 1852 he took up the post of Treasurer of State of New York. In 1855 he joined the American Party and later the Republican Party . The Governor Edwin D. Morgan appointed him in 1859 to the Commissary-General of the Militia of New York. During the Civil War he joined General John Pope's staff in 1862 , but soon became seriously ill and died of the effects of the disease a year later.
