Lawrence J. Fitzgerald

Lawrence J. Fitzgerald (* before 1869 in Ireland , † July 12, 1918 in Auburn , New York ) was an American businessman and politician . He was New York's Treasurer of State from 1886 to 1890 .

Career

Not much is known about Lawrence J. Fitzgerald. He was born in Ireland. His family immigrated to the United States when he was a boy. She settled in Skaneateles (New York). He later moved to Cortland, New York. In 1869 he founded the Cortland Wagon Company, which manufactured carriages, wagons and bicycles.

Fitzgerald was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1882 he was President of the Village of Cortland. He was elected Treasurer of State of New York in 1885 and re-elected in 1887. In 1906 he was part of the opposition to William Randolph Hearst , who was nominated by the Democratic Party for the office of governor of New York. Instead, he supported the Republican Charles Evans Hughes .

Fitzgerald served as Vice President of the National Bank of Cortland for 30 years . He was also a director of Madison Square Bank and Columbia Bank, both in New York City .
