N. Monroe Marshall

Nathaniel Monroe Marshall (born June 13, 1854 in Schuyler Falls , New York , † February 16, 1935 in Malone , New York ) was an American banker and politician ( Republican Party ). He was New York's Treasurer of State from 1921 to 1923 .

Life

Nathaniel Monroe Marshall, son of Ann L. Hackstaff and Nathaniel Marshall, was born in Clinton County in 1854 . His youth were overshadowed by the civil war. In 1874 he became a telegraph operator and station agent for the Chateaugay Railroad in Plattsburgh (New York). He later moved to Bellmont, New York, where he worked as an accountant for the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Company . On May 15, 1877, he married Lucy Ann Bellows († 1920). The couple had two daughters and one son.

In 1885 he became a supervisor in the town of Bellmont. That same year he was elected County Clerk in Franklin County - a post he held for two terms. He then worked as a claims adjuster for the Fidelity and Casualty Company until 1895 , when he became vice president of the Farmers National Bank of Malone . In 1896 he moved to the Peoples National Bank (later the Peoples Trust Company ) in Malone. There he was vice-president until 1898, then president until 1930 and finally chairman of the board until his death.

Marshall served from 1915 to 1920 for the 34th District in the New York Senate (138th to 143rd  New York State Legislature ). He was elected Treasurer of State of New York in 1920. In his re-election in 1922, he suffered a defeat to the Democrat George K. Shuler . Marshall attended the 1928 Republican National Convention as a delegate .
