Gerrit L. Dox

Gerrit Lansing Dox (born May 13, 1784 in Albany , New York , † August 2, 1847 in Waterloo , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . He was Treasurer of State of New York from 1817 to 1821 .

Life

Gerrit L. Dox was born in Albany County approximately nine months after the War of Independence ended . Nothing is known about his youth. In January 1816 he was appointed Postmaster of Albany. His brother Peter P. Dox previously held the post from 1814 until his death on November 21, 1815. Gerrit L. Dox was replaced in July 1817 from his post. In January 1817 he married Magdalena Bogart (1796-1883). Dox was appointed Treasurer of State of New York in February 1817 - a post he held until January 1821. In August 1823, the US Postal Administration sued him for an error relating to the transfer of some of the money received in the accounting records that were handed over. In the course of the process it was found that Dox was bankrupt in 1819. In 1839 he was appointed judge at the Justices Court of Albany . He and his wife were buried in Pulteney Street Cemetery in Geneva, New York.
