Robert McClellan (politician, 1747)

Robert McClellan (born January 1747 in County Londonderry , Ireland , † October 8, 1817 in Albany , New York ) was an American trader and politician . He was Treasurer of State of New York from 1798 to 1803 .

Career

Robert McClellan, son of Jane Henry and Michael McClellan, was born in County Londonderry during the reign of King George II . The McClellan family immigrated to New England during his childhood . His father passed away when he was around 10 years old. Later his older brother took him to Albany, New York, where he became a trader. In 1771 he married Jane Williams (* 1750), daughter of Cornelia Bogardus and John Williams. The couple had nine children together. When the War of Independence broke out in 1775, he financially supported the colonists' cause. McClellan became a member of the Albany Committee of Correspondence in 1776 . He was then elected to the Albany City Council in 1780 , first as assistant and then as Alderman. 1798 he was appointed Treasurer of State of New York - a post he what to held his resignation on January 31, 1803 after the discovery of a shortfall of about 33,000  US dollars happened.
