Philip Dorsheimer (born April 15, 1797 in Wöllstein , Département du Mont-Tonnerre (now Rhineland-Palatinate ), † April 11, 1868 ) was an American politician . He was Treasurer of State of New York from 1860 to 1861 . The Lieutenant Governor William Dorsheimer was his son.

Career

Nothing is known about Philip Dorsheimer's youth. He emigrated in 1815 to the United States and settled there in Harrisburg ( Pennsylvania ) down. On August 23, 1821, he married Sarah Gorgas. In 1826 he moved to Lyons (New York) and from there in April 1836 to Buffalo (New York). The President Martin Van Buren appointed him in 1838 to the postmaster of Buffalo. On April 1, 1845, he was reappointed Buffalo Postmaster by President James K. Polk . He belonged to the Democratic Party , but joined that party after the founding of the Republican Party . In 1856 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention . He was elected Treasurer of State of New York in 1859 and held the post from 1860 to 1861. He then worked from 1862 to 1864 as an Inland Tax Collector in Buffalo. His term in office was overshadowed by the civil war.
