Benjamin Enos

Benjamin Enos (born February 13, 1788 in Richmond , Rhode Island , † February 4, 1868 in DeRuyter , New York ) was an American politician .

Career

Benjamin Enos, son of Thankful Coon and Joseph Enos, was born in Washington County about five years after the War of Independence ended . Nothing is known about his youth. On April 5, 1810, he married Sarah Doty (1788-1884) in Canaan (New York). The couple settled in DeRuyter, New York , in 1814 during the British-American War .

Enos served in the New York State Assembly for Madison County in 1834, 1839, and 1840 . In 1837 he was supervisor of Town DeRuyter. He was elected Canal Commissioner by the New York State Legislature in 1842 . As a member of the Hunker faction of the Democratic Party , he served as Treasurer of State of New York from 1845 to 1846 .
