Salme Kõiv
Salme Kõiv (born October 26 . Jul / 8. November 1909 greg. In Antsla , Governorate of Livonia ; † 29. August 2007 in Tallinn , Estonia ), 1937-1940 Salme Kabur was an Estonian journalist and writer .
Life
Kõiv attended the elementary school in Antsla from 1918 to 1925 and attended the girls' high school in Võru from 1925 to 1929 . From 1927 she contributed to the newspaper Elu ('Life') in Võru. She tried to earn a living as a typist. From 1935 to 1940 she worked in the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Tallinn, after the Communist takeover in Estonia, she worked for the newspaper Kommunist in 1940/1941 .
When the German-Soviet War broke out in 1941, she went to the Soviet Union like a number of her colleagues and participated in the cultural life of the Estonian exile community. After the war she stayed in Moscow for a while and took courses in journalism at the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1945/1946 .
From 1947 she worked in various newspaper offices and publishing houses in Tallinn. She was married to the Estonian writer Boris Kabur from 1937 to 1940 .
Literary work
From 1927 Kõiv published short stories and novellas in magazines. She has also published articles on relations between Finland and Estonia in Finnish and Estonian magazines.
Her greatest success was the novel Reet Tammiku (proper name), with which she received 3rd prize in the 1939 Loodus publishing house's novel competition. In it, she describes "with great sincerity the love story of a young student who later developed into the married drama of a young pedagogue." Although another review attested her writing talent, the author only published sporadically after the Second World War.
Salme Kõiv has also translated from Russian and Finnish.
Trivia
In Antsla she was the classmate of Bernard Kangro , whose debut collection of sonnets (1935) she wrote down.
