Charles Edward Dudley (born May 23, 1780 in Staffordshire , England , † January 23, 1841 in Albany , Albany County , New York ) was an Anglo-American politician . Between 1829 and 1833 he represented the state of New York in the US Senate .

Career

In 1794 Charles Dudley came to Newport , Rhode Island with his widowed mother . He attended the public schools in his new homeland and later worked first as an employee in a payment office (counting room) and later in commerce. At the same time he began a political career. In the presidential elections of 1816 he was the elector for the victorious candidate James Monroe . He became a member of the Albany City Council, where he had meanwhile moved. He was also mayor there between 1821 and 1824 and again in 1828 and 1829. Between 1820 and 1825 he was also a member of the New York Senate . In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by him in 1828 .

After the previous US Senator and later President Martin Van Buren was elected Governor of New York State, he had to give up the office of US Senator. Charles Dudley, who was a fellow party member of Van Buren, was elected to succeed him. Dudley served his mandate between January 15, 1829 and March 3, 1833. Since Andrew Jackson took office as the 7th US President (1829–1837), there has been heated debate within and outside of Congress about its policy. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis and the banking policy of the president. Dudley voted for Jackson's policies in Congress. In 1832 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in Washington, DC ended , he returned to Albany. He continued to take part in the political events of his time, but no longer held any other official office. At that time he was also interested in astronomy. Charles Dudley died in Albany on January 23, 1841.
