Margaret Edson

Margaret Edson (born July 4, 1961 in Washington, DC ) is an American playwright who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Theater in 1999 for her play Wit .

Life

Margaret Edson graduated from Sidwell Friends High School in Washington, DC and then studied Renaissance history at Smith College , from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). After studying English literature at Georgetown University , which she completed with a Master of Arts (MA), she became a teacher at a primary school in Atlanta .

In 1999 she received the Pulitzer Prize for Theater for her play Wit from 1995 . The German-language premiere took place at the Wiener Schauspielhaus under the direction of Hans Gratzer on January 23, 2000. In 2001 the play was filmed by Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson and Christopher Lloyd in the leading roles. The German Academy of Performing Arts named the play in a production by Claudia Johanna Leist as radio play of the month January 2001 .
