action

In the early 1980s, Quentin Crisp moved to New York. The film "The Naked Civil Servant" made him well known in America. He uses his increasing popularity and appears in various theaters with his “One Man Show” under the title “How to Be Happy”, in which he answers questions from the audience in an amusing and biting manner. Connie Clausen is also present at one of his performances . She takes Quentin Crisp under her wing and becomes his agent. Soon his appearances are more than just an insider tip for a small scene. It is Connie who gets Quentin Crisp a job as a film critic for the magazine "The Village Voice". Phillip Steele, the magazine's editor, and Quentin become friends over time. They visit gay bars and countless parties. Quentin Crisp can bring his sharp-tongued wit to the people there too. When the immigration authorities wanted to expel Quentin Crisp from the country, he referred to a paragraph in the statutes on his “special merits” and received an unlimited residence permit with the status of “ resident alien ”.

One day Quentin Crisp makes a thoughtless remark that " AIDS is just another fad" makes enemies of many, especially in New York's gay scene. Planned performances of his show have been canceled and a planned reading trip for his new book has been put on hold. There is even a break between himself and Phillip Steele. Quentin Crisp gets lonely and lonely until one day the young artist Patrick Angus approaches him in a café. He adores Crisp and wants to hear his opinion on his paintings. Crisp gets involved with Angus and over time they become friends more and more. Quentin tries to bring Patrick's pictures into a gallery, but the potential gallery owners waved them off because they found the pictures too "gay". Ultimately he can convince Phillip Steele to print some of Patrick's pictures in the "Village Voice". Because of this publication, there is finally a gallery that exhibits Patrick's pictures. He can only enjoy this fame for a short time, however, because Patrick dies of AIDS.

At this time there was a renewed rapprochement between Quentin and Phillip, which also lasted when Quentin Crisp was persuaded by the performance artist Penny Arcade to perform with her. Through them, Quentin was introduced to a new and young audience in the early 1990s. Quentin Crisp is even offered a film role in a movie in old age. He travels to England to play the role of Queen Elizabeth I in the film adaptation of " Orlando " . Quentin's appearances are becoming increasingly difficult because his health is deteriorating more and more. Both Penny and Phillip take care of him. When Quentin is feeling very bad again and he is talking to Phillip about it, he calls him by his first name for the first time, because up until now he has only addressed him as “Mister Steele”, as this, in his opinion, is about respect the other person acts. Quentin is invited again to England on a book tour, but Penny is very worried that he will be able to survive such a long flight.
