The Schwule Filmwoche Freiburg (SFF) is the oldest continuously existing all-gay film festival in the German-speaking area . It has taken place annually and without interruption since 1985. Alongside the CSD Freiburg, the SFF is one of the highlights in gay life in the university city .

The SFF shows films from all over the world that deal with gay topics. Films in foreign languages are usually shown in their original version with German subtitles, less often with English subtitles. Individual films are shown in German dubbed versions.

The SFF is carried out entirely by volunteers. In addition to a website, the volunteers design a program and a poster every year. The SFF is financed by the institutional support of the cultural office of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau, as well as by sponsors, admission fees and donations.

history

The SFF was brought into being in 1985 by the then predecessor of Rosa Hilfe Freiburg eV. The aim of the Rosa Telefon campaign group was to help gay films reach an audience that barely had a chance in classic cinemas in the mid-1980s. In 1984 a corresponding event was initiated in Würzburg that no longer exists today. The world's first gay film festival was held in San Francisco in 1977.

In 1996 a "LesBiSchwule" film series was put together for the Academic Film Club at the University of Freiburg eV . In 1997 the Schwule Filmwoche Freiburg became a registered association. In the same year, the organizers added La Mediterranée first time a focus ( Focus ). Other, sometimes large, gay film festivals also took up this idea later. In addition, this film week aroused the interest of national media ( 3sat , Südwestrundfunk ), which reported on it from Freiburg.

An exhibition was shown in individual years parallel to the film week in the art space of the independent artist group freiburg in the old Wiehrebahnhof.

Until the year 2000 the festival location was the municipal cinema in the old Wiehrebahnhof with almost 100 seats. For reasons of space, in 2001 the SFF moved to the Kandelhof cinema with 200 seats.

Since the 24th SFF 2008, the films shown have been rated by visitors using voting slips. The winning films will receive an (undoped) audience award.

In 2009 the SFF celebrated its 25th anniversary with an extended supporting program and a series of supporting films.

For the 30th birthday, the team organized an anniversary gala with guests from politics and the creative industries, moderated by music cabaret artist Holger Edmaier .

The Film Week team currently consists of a dozen gay men who volunteer to take care of the organization and all aspects of the small festival.
