The circle is a feature film by the Swiss director Stefan Haupt from 2014. It premiered on February 10, 2014 at the Berlin International Film Festival .

Zurich, at the end of the 1950s: the young, shy teacher Ernst Ostertag becomes a member of the Swiss gay organization “Der Kreis”. There he met the travesty star Röbi Rapp and fell madly in love with him.
Röbi and Ernst experience the heyday and break-up of the organization, which is considered the pioneer of gay emancipation across Europe. Ernst has to choose between his bourgeois existence as a teacher at a girls' school and his commitment to homosexuality. For Röbi, it's about the first serious love affair, that love affair that will last a lifetime.

The film is set in the late 1950s and early 1960s and depicts the decline of the Zurich gay organization and the magazine of the same name, Der Kreis . The organization campaigned for homosexual rights from 1943 to 1967.
The staging is complemented by conversations held in 2013 with contemporary witnesses Ernst Ostertag (* 1930) and Röbi Rapp (1930–2018). The two were in a relationship from 1956 until Rapp's death and in 2003 the first people to have a civil partnership registered in the canton of Zurich.

The film, produced by Contrast Film Zurich , is distributed worldwide by Wide House and was sold in more than twelve countries in the first four months. In Switzerland the film will be distributed by the Ascot-Elite Entertainment Group , in Germany by Edition Salzgeber . Wolfe Video has acquired the distribution rights in North America .
One day after the film was shown in the “Sunny Bunny” section at the Molodist film festival in Kiev , the Zhovten cinema was set on fire by an unknown person during the screening of the LGBT themed film “Les Nuits d'Été”. Nobody was injured. The police there suspect a homophobic background, whereas the producer of this film, Ivan Madeo , assumes economic interests - the cinema should give way to a shopping center.
