Babett Arens (born July 7, 1959 in Munich ) is an Austrian actress and theater director .
Life
Babett Arens is the daughter of the actor couple Peter Arens and Margrit Ensinger . She grew up in Zurich because her parents had moved from the Münchner Kammerspiele to the Schauspielhaus Zurich . Here Arens attended the Acting Academy from 1976 to 1979 and made her debut in the year of her graduation at the Basel theaters , where she was a member until 1983. She then lived in Paris for a while and joined a theater group with which she appeared at the Avignon Festival, among others . After returning to Switzerland, she was engaged at the Schauspielhaus Zurich from 1985 to 1986, then from 1986 to 1988 at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. After a further commitment to the Schauspielhaus Zürich in 1989, Arens moved the focus of her work to Austria for about ten years in the early 1990s, where she played at the Vienna Volkstheater , the Burgtheater and the Schauspielhaus Wien . From 2001 to 2007 Arens was engaged at the Schauspiel Frankfurt , since then she has been working mainly in Austria again, among others at the Landestheater Niederösterreich , the Theatersommer Haag and the theater formation aktionstheater ensemble .
Well-known roles in Arens' stage career so far have been Elisabeth I in Friedrich Schiller's drama Maria Stuart , the title roles in Katharina Knie by Carl Zuckmayer and Federico García Lorcas Yerma, and Franziska in Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's comedy Minna von Barnhelm (according to her own statements, her favorite role). She was also Claire Zachanassian in Friedrich Dürrenmatt's visit to the old lady and Marthe Rull in Zerbrochnen pitcher of Heinrich von Kleist . She often played in pieces by Elfriede Jelinek .
Since the beginning of the 2010s, Babett Arens has also been directing on Austrian stages, for example at the Landestheater Niederösterreich and in Vienna at the KosmosTheater , the Volkstheater and the Theater zum Fear . On the latter, her production of Maxim Gorkis Nachtasyl received a nomination for the Nestroy Prize for the best off-production. Arens was seen as Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet at the Schauspielhaus Graz in 2016 and 2017 .
Around 1980 Arens began working in film and television. She had her first roles in two episodes of the Derrick series , after which she often played in Swiss productions, for example in the film Katzendiebe directed by Markus Imboden or in its modern version by Heidi based on the novel by Johanna Spyri . She was also seen in the historical film Sisi and two Tatort episodes.
Babett Arens lives in Vienna. She is married to the actor, speaker and director Florentin Groll .
