Wild Innocence is an American - Spanish drama film . Directed by Tom Kalin , the screenplay was written by Howard A. Rodman based on a book by Natalie Robins and Steven ML Aronson .

action

The plot of the film extends from 1946 to 1972 and tells in six parts about the life of actress Barbara Daly . She marries Brooks Baekeland, who comes from a wealthy family and was once a soldier. The couple have a son, Tony, whom Barbara adored from day one. In 1959 they move to Paris , later they live in Spain . Barbara has a close, intimate relationship with her son and treats him more like a partner than a son. In Mallorca he met the local Blanca, who, however, met Tony's father after a trip with the Baekeland family. In frustration, Barbara exposes her ex-husband at the airport by revealing intimate details from her love life. Tony now has a relationship with a childhood friend as well as with Sam Green, the bisexual art dealer and friend of his mother. But all of his relationships fail because his sick love basically belongs only to his mother. After his father has made off with Blanca, the latter breaks off contact with Tony and his wife, which Tony suffers greatly. In letters, the young man tells his emotionally cold father about events in his life, but without ever receiving an answer.

Barbara and her son move to London , where Tony finds a job. His mother thinks he feels much better in England than in France , he eats and goes out, but appearances are deceptive. In truth, Tony's condition is now so dramatic that he begins to hallucinate , embarks on an incestuous adventure with his mother and then stabs her to death. He also reports about this in a letter to his father.

Reviews

Bernard Besserglik wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on May 25, 2007 that the film could be compared with the works of European directors such as Luchino Visconti , Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Jean-Luc Godard . It is not necessarily a masterpiece, but it is better than many other films shown at the Cannes International Film Festival . Julianne Moore has played her most challenging role in years. The director avoids sentimentality and ensures that the characters remain recognizable as human beings because of their weaknesses.

The lexicon of international films said: “The authentic story filmed as a memorial document neither offers a convincing character psychology nor does it signal interest in the socio-cultural background. The use of two different film languages also remains a half-hearted experiment with which the potential for conflict cannot be exploited. "
