The Mercury Turnpike Cruiser was a model of the full size class (upper middle class) produced by the American automobile manufacturer Mercury from 1956 to 1958 , which is part of the Ford group .

Model history

The Turnpike Cruiser functioned as a top Mercury model in the 1957 model year and was characterized by a particularly extravagant design and unusual equipment features, some of which go back to the XM Turnpike Cruiser concept car from 1956. A two-door hardtop coupé, a four-door hardtop sedan and a convertible were offered . On the sedan, the rear window was tilted forward and could be lowered electrically. At the front edge of the roof there were dummy air scoops and a dummy antenna, the recesses in the rear fenders were filled with gold-colored decorative inserts. The Turnpike Cruiser was powered by a six-liter V8.

In the 1958 model year, the Turnpike Cruiser models were still available, with the exception of the convertible, but were no longer a separate series, but belonged to the Montclair series; the new top-of-the-range Mercury model was Park Lane . The engine was enlarged to 7 liters and now developed 365 SAE hp (268 kW).

The Turnpike Cruiser was then canceled without replacement.
