The Mercury Cyclone was a sports coupe manufactured by Mercury from 1964 to 1971 .

The muscle car was not a stand-alone model, but as a coupe only a sportier version of the smaller series of Mercury, the first as a Mercury Comet and from 1968 as Mercury Montego was sold.

A V8 engine was standard for the Cyclone, and engine output has been increased over the years. In the first two years (1964/65) the engine had a displacement of 4700 cm³; the same engine was also used in the sportier versions of the Ford Mustang built. After the model change in 1965, both the Comet and the Cyclone had 6400 cc, from the 1968 model year a 7-liter engine provided the drive. The maximum available standard power was 390 SAE PS; so the Cyclone was well positioned in the performance race of the late 1960s. In the 1970/71 model years, the Cyclone spoiler, produced in limited numbers, with standard spoilers on the front and rear, special decorative stripes and a limited- slip differential, served as the particularly sporty top model of the series .

Mercury Cyclone Spoiler (1970)

From 1970, the emissions regulations in the USA were tightened. In order to be able to comply with the new limit values, the output of the engines had to be reduced. With that, the muscle cars lost their right to exist. 1971 was therefore the last year in which the Cyclone was offered. As a successor there was a sporty equipment of the Montego Coupé with the name Montego GT .

90,526 copies of the Cyclone were built in seven years, 16,779 of which were convertibles in 1966/67 and 2,384 Cyclone spoilers in 1970/71.
