The Mercury vehicles were given model names for the first time in 1952. Until then, they were only sold as Mercury . The Custom series was simpler; the better equipped series was called the Monterey series . Like the Ford models of the same year, they had been completely redesigned. There was now a one-piece windshield, the rear window was designed as a panoramic window . For the first time, the Mercury models showed the fashionable pontoon shape with a smooth bonnet. The side-controlled V8 engine, like that of its predecessor, had a displacement of 4185 cc, but made 125 bhp (92 kW) at 3700 rpm. The Custom was available as a two-door coupé, two- or four-door sedan or five-door station wagon with 6 or 8 seats.

In 1953 the model was slightly revised. The bumper horns now had the appearance of missiles and the Z-shaped sideline gave way to straight chrome strips at the height of the belt line. The combination models fell away.

There were also few changes in 1954: only the vertical rear lights grabbed around the corners of the vehicle. The main changes were made to the engine. The new V8 engine now had overhead valves and achieved 162 bhp (119 kW) with approximately the same displacement (4195 cm³). The sports coupe had given way to a hardtop variant.

A total of around 324,000 Customs were built in three years.

In 1955 the Mercury models were fundamentally revised again. The wheelbase grew by 25 mm and the vehicles became a bit wider and longer. The headlights disappeared under forward-sloping hoods in the body color and the cross bars of the chrome-plated radiator grille merged into the side chrome strips. The massive front bumper had six large openings and the bumper horns had returned to their vertical shape. The new cars shared the Z-shaped side line with the 1952 models. A larger engine with a displacement of 4785 cm³ was used. It made 188 bhp (138 kW) at 4400 rpm. In addition to the body shapes of the previous year, there was also a five-door station wagon with six seats.

In the following year, the Medalist replaced the Custom as the simplest Mercury model. The 1956 Custom now represented a mid-range trim level; above it were the Monterey and the new Montclair . There were only a few stylistic changes compared to the previous year. An even larger engine with 5112 cm³ displacement and an output of 210 bhp (154 kW) at 4600 rpm. was used. In addition to the models from the previous year, an 8-seater station wagon as well as a 4-door hardtop sedan and a 2-door convertible were also offered.

158,016 copies were made in these two years. In 1957 the Custom and the recently introduced Medalist were no longer available and the Monterey became the simplest Mercury model.
