For the 1955 model year, the Mercury model range , which had previously only consisted of the Mercury Monterey , was expanded to include the Montclair model - probably named after the Montclair villa district in New Jersey .

The car was available as a coupé , convertible and four-door sedan , with the coupé clearly dominating at least among the vehicles that have survived to this day and the four-door version being a marginal phenomenon. In contrast to the technically and visually very similar Monterey - as was common in the USA at the time - there is a "Montclair" lettering on the fenders and various additional chrome strips.

The drive was provided by a 201 SAE PS (148 kW) version of the 4.8 liter Mercury V8, coupled with a three-speed or overdrive manual gearbox or an automatic called "Merc-O-Matic". In 1956 the engine was enlarged to 5.1 liters and in the Montclair now developed 213 SAE-PS (157 kW).

In 1957, all Mercury models received a redesigned body, and the Montclair now functioned under the newly introduced Mercury Turnpike Cruiser (from 1959 Mercury Park Lane ) as the mid-range model of the brand. Nothing changed in the range of models, but the engine now developed 258 SAE PS (180 kW). In 1958 the V8 grew again to 6.3 liters displacement and developed 335 SAE-PS (246 kW), on request there was also the seven-liter V8 from Lincoln with 365 to 406 SAE-PS (268/299 kW). In the 1959 model year, the convertible was discontinued, the base engine now had 325 SAE-PS (239 kW), while the seven-liter engine was limited in output to 350 SAE-PS (257 kW).

For the 1961 model year, the Montclair was initially discontinued and was replaced by the short-lived full-size version of the Mercury Meteor .

After one of the names of the full-size vehicles for the newly introduced middle class was used in 1962 as with various manufacturers - at Mercury the Meteor - the name Montclair was reactivated in 1964.

The car was again positioned between Monterey and Park Lane. The sedans and coupés (called Montclair Marauder in the hardtop version) were powered by 6.4 or 7 liter V8 engines (253-431 SAE hp / 186-317 kW). In the years that followed, the 6.4-liter remained the base engine throughout, but the performance of both engines fluctuated slightly.

In 1968 the Montclair finally fell victim to a major restructuring of Mercury's full-size range. In addition to Montclair, Park Lane was also omitted. For this, a designation was introduced with the Mercury Marquis , which was to remain until the end of Mercury 2010.
