The Mercury Bobcat was a car model of the subcompact (small car) class produced by the US automobile manufacturer Mercury , which was offered in Canada from 1973 and in the USA from 1975 to 1980. The Bobcat (German: Rotluchs ) is technically and stylistically almost completely the same as the Ford Pinto .

Model history

After Mercury had offered the Bobcat exclusively in Canada in the 1974 model year, the Mercury version of the Ford Pinto also appeared on the US market in early 1975. The biggest obvious difference to the Pinto was the larger chrome grille of the Bobcat. A three-door hatchback sedan (Bobcat Runabout) and a three-door station wagon (Bobcat Villager), powered by an 84 hp (62 kW) 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine or a 2.8-liter V6 with 98 hp ( 72 kW), which could be combined with a three-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic. In 1976 the three-speed gearbox was replaced by a four-speed manual transmission. In the following model years there were the usual annual small modifications to the trim and the engines varied a little in performance. For the 1979 model year, parallel to the Pinto, there was a major facelift with a slightly angled front section; technically everything stayed the same.

In 1980, the production of the Bobcat ended, its successor was the Mercury Lynx , which was based on the American Ford Escort .

A total of 224,026 examples of the Bobcat were built in five and a half years.
