Mercury was a car brand from Ford , under which cars in the middle price segment were offered. The brand was above the parent brand Ford, but below the premium brand Lincoln . Vehicles of this brand were sold in the North American markets (USA, Canada, Mexico) as well as in the Gulf States and some East African countries. Mercury is derived from the name of the Roman god Mercurius .
history
Mercury was founded in Dearborn in 1938 , directly at the Ford headquarters , at the instigation of Edsel Ford . At first only one model was built under the name Mercury , which was a better equipped version of the Ford V8 . In terms of price, it was between the Ford and the Lincoln-Zephyr luxury car and was very well received by buyers. In 1942 its production - like that of all civil US cars - had to be stopped due to the war.
In 1945 the Lincoln-Mercury Division was created , under which the Ford Group combined its two premium brands Lincoln and Mercury. From 1946 the pre-war model was offered again with a few changes. While there was only the Mercury until 1951 , different models were offered from 1952, which now also had model names. Since the 1960s, almost all Mercury models have been based on Ford vehicles. Outward differences related primarily to details of the front and rear design; only individual vehicles - such as the Cougar from 1983 - differed from their Ford counterparts in that they had a separate body. The Mercury models were regularly better equipped than the cheaper Ford models. Mercury vehicles were sometimes sold with different names on the Canadian market.
At the end of the 2010 calendar year, Ford ceased production of Mercury vehicles as part of its restructuring efforts. In 2011 vehicles that have already been produced will be sold.
