Rauch & Lang was an American vehicle brand.

prehistory

Jacob J. Rauch founded a forge in Cleveland , Ohio in 1853 . His son Charles also ran a forge from 1860. Jacob died in 1863. His company was closed. Charles continued. From 1878 he employed Charles EJ Lang.

Brand history

Rauch and Lang founded the Rauch & Lang Carriage Company in 1884 . Henry Heideloff, John Kreifer and Herman Kroll were also involved. Rauch became president, Lang secretary and treasurer. They made carriages .

In 1903 the Buffalo Electric Carriage Company began selling electric cars .

In 1905 the production of own automobiles began . The brand name was Rauch & Lang . In 1907 the previous engine supplier Hertner Electric Company was taken over and John H. Hertner was hired as chief engineer. In 1911 there were legal disputes with the competitor Baker Motor Vehicle Company .

1915 did the merger with Baker. The new company was called Baker, Rauch & Lang Company , or Baker R & L Company for short . Charles CF Wieber became President, Frederick R. White and Charles EJ Lang Vice Presidents, RC Norton Treasurer, GH Kelly Secretary, FW Treadway Council, Fred R. White and Rollin C. White Directors. Baker vehicles were produced until 1916. Between 1916 and 1919 bodies were made for the Owen Magnetic . In 1919 the Raulang Body Division was founded as an independent department for body construction. In the same year a department for industrial trucks was added. Both organizations persisted beyond 1920.

In January 1920, Ray S. Deering of Stevens-Duryea bought the company's car division. Depending on the source, the new company name was Rauch & Lang Inc. or Rauch & Lang Electric Car Manufacturing Company . The seat was moved to Chicopee Falls , Massachusetts . Taxis were added in 1922 , which were marketed as R&L . In 1924 financial problems began. In 1928 about half of the plant was leased to the Moth Aircraft Corporation . In that year, the series production of cars ended. That was also the end of the R & L brand name . Individual pieces and prototypes were made until 1932.

Quantities

By June 1905, 18 vehicles had been built . 32 more followed by the end of 1905. In 1908, 500 vehicles were produced, although orders for 800 vehicles had been received. 700 vehicles have been handed down for 1919. In 1920 143 cars were built, in 1921 103 and in 1922 fewer than 40. In 1923 300 taxis with gasoline engines were built. The electric taxis from that decade were far less successful. Likewise, the electric cars hardly found private buyers. Three prototypes were built in 1928 and a small number of other taxis were built until 1932.

vehicles

Until 1921 there were only electric cars. Model names are only known from 1912.

From 1905 to 1906 there were three models to choose from. They differed in the length of the chassis , the body and, of course, in the price. A Stanhope with a 170 cm wheelbase , a Coupé with a 173 cm wheelbase and a Depot Wag. With a 221 cm wheelbase are mentioned.

In 1907 a Surrey with 231 cm wheelbase was added.

For the period from 1908 to 1909, the range of bodies was expanded. The Coupé now had a 170 cm wheelbase, the Stanhope and an Extended Coupé 188 cm wheelbase, the Victoria and Brougham 216 cm wheelbase and the Surrey 262 cm wheelbase.

From 1910 to 1911 only a Stanhope had a wheelbase of 196 cm. The other bodies, Runabout , Stanhope, Victoria, Extended Coupé and Coupé, had a wheelbase of 216 cm.

Model names were introduced in 1912. The Stanhope model had a wheelbase of 212 cm. Coupé and Stanhope were available. There was also the Brougham model with different wheelbases. For the Demi Brougham it was 212 cm and for the Coach 277 cm. In between were Landaulet , Brougham, Victoria, Roadster and Club Roadster with 231 cm wheelbase.

Eight models are named for 1913: Model B and Model XT Colonial as a four-seater Brougham, Model CR as a Club Roadster, Model R as a two-seater roadster and Model T as a five-seater Brougham with a wheelbase of 234 cm each, Model DB as a four-seater Demi-Brougham with 218 cm Wheelbase as well as Model J as a four-seat coach and Model TC as a five-seat town car with a 267 cm wheelbase.

In 1914, the Model CR as a two-seater coupé and the Model R as a roadster had the same wheelbase of 234 cm. The B4 model as Brougham was slightly longer with a wheelbase of 244 cm. The J 4 Coach model had a wheelbase of 254 cm. Are called Double Control , Front Control , Wheel Steer and Rear Control , which also provides information that some models from the front seat, others could be controlled from the rear seat, and still others from both seats.

In 1915 three models had a wheelbase of 234 cm. These were Model BX 5 as Brougham, Model CR 5 as Club Roadster and Model R 5 as Roadster. The Brougham Model 85 had a wheelbase of 244 cm. The L-5 was the first sedan with a 254 cm wheelbase. The J 5 Coach model with a 259 cm wheelbase was again available as Double Control , Front Control and Rear Control . The longest vehicle was the Town Car Model TC-5 with a 277 cm wheelbase.

In 1916, Model BX 6 , Model CR 6 , Model R 6 , Model 86 and Model TC 6 replaced the previous year's models , whose designation ended with 5 , without any further changes. There was also Model J 6 Double Control as a coach and Model TXC 6 as a town car, each with a 254 cm wheelbase.

From 1917 to 1918 there were four models in the range. The BX-7 model was available as a five-seat Brougham and two-seat roadster, while the RX-7 was only available as a two-seat roadster. Both had 234 cm wheelbase. The JX-7 model with a 254 wheelbase was either a five-seater Brougham or a five-seater town car. The model TC-7 as a five-seater town car had the longest wheelbase at 277 cm.

In 1919 the range was limited to two models. A Brougham with a 234 cm wheelbase was designated as a single rear drive . There was also a coach with a 259 cm wheelbase, which was available as a double drive , rear drive and front drive .

From 1920 the wheelbases are not known. That year there was the Model B-36 as Brougham and the Model C-45 as C'ch Single Con. and C'ch Dual Con. , where the abbreviation could stand for coach.

In 1921 the Model B-46 was a Single Drive Brougham and the Model C-55 was a Dbl.Drive C'ch, which probably stood for Double Drive Coach.

From 1922 to 1923, the model C-505 Rear Drive with an electric motor was available as a C'ch for $ 4,250 and as a taxicab for $ 2,750 . The Model C-505 Rear Drive Gasoline had a gasoline engine and was also a taxicab. At $ 2,350, the price was lower than the electric taxi.

In 1924 the vehicles were named Model B-68 , Electric and Gasoline . The only known change was the move from C'ch to Brougham. The prices also stayed the same.

In 1925 the model S-68 was added as a four-door sedan. The price was the same as the brougham.

The sedan was no longer available between 1926 and 1928. The brougham was now $ 5,000.

In 1928 three prototypes were made, one of which still exists. They are called gas-electric , which indicates a hybrid electric vehicle . The base was from Stearns-Knight . They had a six-cylinder - valve engine with 35 hp power. The total output was given as 60 hp. General Electric was involved. The donor and buyer of these vehicles was EHR Green, the son of a multimillionaire who, due to a handicap, had difficulties operating the transmission of ordinary vehicles.

Further prototypes on chassis from Willys-Knight were manufactured as taxis until 1932 and used in eastern cities such as Boston , New York City and Philadelphia .
