Museum Pantheon in Muttenz

The Pantheon Basel in Muttenz is a forum for oldtimer owners and those interested with a museum on the topics of cars and mobility on the road. The owner of the Pantheon is Pantheon Basel AG , a 100% subsidiary of Musfeld AG .

idea

The idea behind the Pantheon Basel is to combine a garage and a car repair shop with a museum. On the one hand it is the parking space for vintage cars, which are driven more or less regularly, and on the other hand it is part of the museum's exhibition space. This allows private, otherwise hidden collectibles to be shown to a public audience.

history

The initiator of the Pantheon Basel is the Basel entrepreneur Stephan Musfeld. He has been interested in cars since childhood. After he had his driver's license, he bought his first classic car with his apprenticeship wages. Through contact with other classic car collectors, Stephan Musfeld discovered that there was no actual competence center and suitable parking or maintenance areas for classic cars in Switzerland. He thought about what to do about it and put out his feelers. By chance he came across the now unused premises of the former Züblin repair and machine hall in Muttenz. The hall was built in 1965 by the architects Janz and Spindler and has a column-free diameter of 50 meters and a prestressed roof skin that is only 5 cm thin. This made the hall the largest column-free space in Basel in the 1960s. This hall inspired him as a trained civil engineering engineer and never let go of him. The realization of the forum took almost two and a half years. The building was designed and implemented by Toffol Architects Basel .

A ramp was built into the circular hall, which spirals upwards. The ramp begins as a driveway on the outside of the building, leads further up inside and ends just below the roof. Both the roof and the walls are translucent, so that at night, when the hall is illuminated, the vehicles on display can be seen from the outside.

The Pantheon covers 7,500 m², 3,000 m² of which belong to the museum.

The Pantheon Basel was opened on August 16, 2008 and is a museum, workshop, show stage, parking lot, meeting point and vintage car sales point in one.

Forum

The Pantheon is intended to be a meeting place for classic car owners, enthusiasts or those interested. This is why the Pantheon restaurant , which is open all year round, is located in the forum next to the museum , and concerts, cabaret and new car presentations can be held in the lower part of the hall. As an event location, the interior can also be used for private events, e.g. B. from companies or brand clubs, and offers space for up to 1200 people.

The forum includes the Classic Garage , where customers have the opportunity to make use of professional services relating to all aspects of classic cars. There is a saddlery, paint preparation and mechanical workshop there.

In the pit building to the north, in addition to parking spaces for oldtimers or classics, whose owners prefer it more discreet, boxes of 30 to 75 m² can be rented constantly for private hobbyists. Wash boxes and vacuum cleaner boxes complete the range.

museum

The museum is open daily and visitors can look at the neatly parked vintage cars on the spiral ramp and exhibited in the interior, and even watch the mechanics and the saddler at work. In addition, other means of road transport such as bicycles, motorcycles and carriages are on display: For example, the racing bike of "Ferdy National" Kübler , with which he became the first Swiss to win the Tour de France in 1950 ; or Ordinary Racer , the 10-kilogram Hochrad of Albert Aichele , with the Basel (h 37.08 km /) 1887 a new hour record in Munich set up. The order of the objects roughly outlines the development of the automobile, with its oldest representative - the Benz patent motor car from 1886 - being represented in one of the few replicas made.

Guided tours are offered through the exhibition.

Car models and literature are available in the affiliated museum shop.
