description

The company was founded in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , USA in 1908 by engineers Stephen Foster Briggs and Harold M. Stratton . Originally, automobiles were supposed to be manufactured. Automobiles were built in 1908 and from 1919 to 1923. More important for the company was the production of parts for the automotive industry and built-in motors.

In 1979 Briggs & Stratton bought the German small diesel engine manufacturer Farymann Diesel and wanted to get started with small diesel engines . The plans to develop new water-cooled multi-cylinder engines failed, as well as to reduce the costs of existing single-cylinder engines significantly. Farymann Diesel was therefore sold again in the mid-1980s. In 2004 the competitor Simplicity Manufacturing was taken over. The competitor Murray, who went bankrupt in the same year, was bought up the following year.

In 1990 Briggs & Stratton began honoring beautiful parks in the United States. Briggs & Stratton has sponsored the “Most Beautiful Park” competition in Europe since 2002. Since then, a jury commissioned by Briggs & Stratton has awarded prizes to the ten or five most beautiful parks in Germany , France , Great Britain , Italy , Poland and Sweden every year. In 2009 the “most beautiful park in Europe” was awarded for the first time.

Briggs & Stratton filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 20, 2020 . In the course of this, the company is taken over by the investment company KPS Capital Partners.

vehicle construction

In 1908 three passenger cars were built . They were given the Superior brand name . They had a four-cylinder engine from the Continental Motors Company . Two were bodied as touring cars and one as roadster .

In 1919 Briggs & Stratton acquired the rights to the Smith Flyer , a buckboard , and manufactured it under the name Briggs & Stratton Flyer until 1923.

The company presents concept vehicles at irregular intervals , e.g. B. 1979 one of the first parallel hybrid vehicles ever, the Briggs & Stratton Hybrid .
