Remains from the Stone Age and the Roman Age have been discovered in Heppendorf. The place is on the old Roman road Trier-Neuss . The St. Gereon Abbey in Cologne owned several estates before 976, including the Fronhof with its chapel. In 1119 the Lords of Heppendorf were first mentioned, who later took the name of Elverfeld as Lords of Elberfeld Castle . They served the Cologne archbishops from the 12th to 14th centuries as ministerials. Since the Middle Ages , the place belonged to the Bergheim office in the Duchy of Jülich . In 1794 French revolutionary troops occupied Heppendorf. The Mairie Heppendorf was created in the canton of Kerpen in the Arrondissement of Cologne in the Département de la Roer . The Mairie Heppendorf was also known as Mairie Grouven in 1800/01. In 1815 Heppendorf came to the Kingdom of Prussia . In 1816 the mayor's office in Heppendorf was formed, which was merged with the Esch office in 1937 and was called Elsdorf office from 1938 . Since January 1, 1975, Heppendorf has been part of the Elsdorf community, which has had city rights since 2011.

Bürgewald

Heppendorf is one of the so-called Bürgewald communities that owned the rights to the Bürgewald . According to the legend, this is due to the holy Arnold von Arnoldsweiler , through the legendary "Ride around the Bürgewald". The main town of the Bürgewald communities is Arnoldsweiler . There the Heppendorfer had to offer a candle to Saint Arnold on Whit Tuesday, later on Whit Monday. This wax interest was only canceled in the 19th century.
