Niederembt is a district of the city of Elsdorf in the North Rhine-Westphalian Rhein-Erft district .

location

Niederembt borders in the east on Bergheim-Glesch , in the south on Esch , in the west on Oberembt and in the north on the Finkel-Bach. Niederembt belongs to the city of Elsdorf. It was initially formed as a municipality in 1975 as part of the regional reform in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and as the legal successor to the previously independent municipalities of Angelsdorf , Elsdorf, Esch, Heppendorf , Niederembt and Oberembt.

history

The roots of Niederembt go way back to the Neolithic Age to around 5000 years ago. The Romans and then the Franks also left a lot of traces here. In the 1980s, 30 graves from that time were discovered in Frankeshoven (part of Niederembt).

The patron saint of the Niederembter Church is Saint Martin. As early as 960, the St. Pantaleon Abbey in Cologne owned numerous estates in Embe. The name Niederembt was first mentioned in 1081.

Niederembt has belonged to the Bergheim office in the Duchy of Jülich since the Middle Ages . In 1794 French troops occupied the place and Niederembt came to the Mairie Esch in the canton Bergheim in the Arrondissement de Cologne in the Département de la Roer . In 1815 Niederembt came to the Kingdom of Prussia and in 1816 to the mayor's office of Esch in the Bergheim (Erft) district . Niederembt has been part of Elsdorf since January 1st, 1975.

religion

The Catholic parish church was first mentioned in 1681. The current parish church was built on the previous buildings in the 15th century. It is the third largest church in the Rhein-Erft district.

Bürgewald

Niederembt is one of the so-called Bürgewald communities that owned the rights to the Bürgewald . According to the legend, this is owed to St. Arnold von Arnoldsweiler for the legendary "Ride around the Bürgewald." The main town of the Bürgewald communities is Arnoldsweiler . There the people of Niederembter had to offer a candle to St. Arnold on Whit Tuesday, later on Whit Monday. This wax interest was only canceled in the 19th century.

Attractions

St. Martinus Church

The parish church in Niederembt (Emba inferior) belonged in 1081 to the St. Pantaleon Abbey in Cologne, to which it was incorporated in 1246; around 1300 it is attested as a parish.

The right of presentation was confirmed to the abbey in 1721.

The dates 1417 and 1446 (or 1496), which are inscribed on offset stones on the north side, refer to late Gothic construction work. The late Gothic nave, which only had a north aisle, was extended in 1893 by a corresponding south aisle and a larger choir according to plans by the Cologne architect Theodor Ross.

White House

According to the information provided by Peter Daniels (1951), the Jülich building regulations of 1554 should not have permitted any new buildings with "overhanging floors".

One can therefore assume that the White House in Niederembt was built in its current form before this time. The building opposite also dates from the same period. Until 1950, the White House belonged to the Church, which until then administered it. As a result of financial difficulties, the church then sold the building to the Elsdorf community.

The White House suffered much damage from the wars. The municipality of Elsdorf has carried out extensive restoration measures to protect the building from falling apart. Care was taken to ensure that the construction and design correspond to the character of the old monument.

Today the White House is the most interesting half-timbered house in town and is a listed building.

Windmill

Anyone coming from Jülich on the B55 into the Rhein-Erft district can see the Niederembter mill from afar.

It is located on Mühlenstraße just outside Niederembt in the direction of Esch. The white plastered windmill stretches four black wings into the sky. It was built in 1799 by Peter Matthias Geuenich. She did her job for around 150 years, turning grain into flour. After the mill burned down in 1909 (1908?) After a lightning strike, it was subsequently operated as a steam mill. It was hit by a bomb in 1944 during World War II. Later it was operated electrically as a "modern mill". The mill was in operation until after the Second World War. In 2004 it was restored.

Economy and Infrastructure

As early as 1863, so-called omnibus journeys by private hauliers operated daily in Niederembt between Kirchherten and Horrem , where there was a connection to the railway line to Cologne , which was opened in 1841 . In 1898 the "Amelner Johännchen" started operations on the Bedburg – Ameln railway line . Passenger traffic on this line was discontinued on March 17, 1953, as it was no longer profitable; freight traffic ended on November 1, 1966. Through this railway, Niederembt was connected to the sugar factories in Ameln and Bedburg and the wool and linoleum factories there.
