Etzweiler was a district of Elsdorf in the Rhineland . It had in the winter of 2006, the lignite - Hambach soft. The last 1,000 or so inhabitants were relocated to Neu-Etzweiler , north of Elsdorf, as part of the expansion of the opencast mine by RWE Power .

Former location

Etzweiler was on the state road 276 between Elsdorf in the north and Buir in the south. In addition to Elsdorf and Buir, Etzweiler had the following neighboring towns: Giesendorf , Berrendorf-Wüllenrath , Tanneck and Manheim . The Bürgewald stretched to the south and west, most of which fell victim to the Hambach opencast mine.

history

Etzweiler was first mentioned in 1141 as "Liucart de Wilre". However, people settled in this place much earlier. During excavations, for example, a picket fence was found, which points to a settlement around 100 BC. Chr. Indicates.

Etzweiler was also one of the communities involved in the Bürgewald, which had to deliver the wax interest to the parish church of Arnoldsweiler every year on Whit Tuesday . Duke Wilhelm I of Jülich confirmed the obligation to pay interest on wax in a document dated March 18, 1360. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the obligation to pay interest on wax was lifted. The population of Etzweiler had to deliver a 2 pound candle. According to legend, participation in the Bürgewald goes back to St. Arnoldus , who is said to have contested the forest in the 8th century, and was given a free bet by Charlemagne after a successful circumnavigation . Arnoldus then distributed the forest to the surrounding communities.

In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period there was also a court seat in Etzweiler. In 1764 the first school opened, which was closed in the 1970s, in 1787 the Catholic parish church of St. Hubertus was built in Etzweiler and in 1794 Etzweiler became French , like the entire Rhineland . In 1815 the place finally becomes Prussian. After the sugar factory opened in the neighboring town of Elsdorf in 1870, more and more people from Etzweiler started looking for work there. Thus industrialization had taken hold in Etzweiler as well. The kindergarten was founded in 1971. Planning for the Hambach opencast mine began in 1957 and it became binding in 1977. From this point on, the centuries-old history of Etzweiler was sealed.

In autumn 2006 all access roads to Etzweiler were closed and blocked with earth walls.

Trivia

In the state of almost complete evacuation, some episodes of the comedy series “ What doesn't fit is made to fit ” were filmed in the empty buildings and sections of the location. At the beginning of 2007, the last remaining traces of the village had already been erased; today lignite is mined there.
