Sterling Automobile Manufacturing Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .
Company history
William and Edward Adelson, Charles Chambers and Henry Hyman founded the company in New York City . Both 1913 and 1915 are given as the year of foundation. The factory was in Paterson , New Jersey . In 1915 the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Sterling New York . The designer was Joseph Anglada, who previously ran the Liberty Motor Company and later worked for the Anderson Buggy Company . The vehicles were intended for export . Sales remained low.
In September 1916, Charles W. Ams took control. He then founded his own Amston Motor Car Company in Bridgeport , Connecticut .

A source mentions a vehicle with a water-cooled four - cylinder engine with OHV valve control and 1703 cm³ displacement as the first model . The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a three-speed gearbox. The chassis had a wheelbase of 259 cm . The original price was 595 US dollars . Other sources do not mention this model.
In December 1915, vehicles with an engine of the Sterling Engine Company with 1970 cc displacement were offered.
Another source mentions a four-cylinder engine from the LeRoi Company and 28 hp . It is not certain that this engine was used before September 1916.
