Springfield Cornice Works was an American manufacturer of automobiles .
Company history
Hinsdale Smith ran the company, based in Springfield , Massachusetts . In 1896 he started producing individual automobiles. The brand name was initially Smith , unofficially also Smith Spring Motor .
Series production did not begin until 1900. Now the vehicles were called Meteor . The Howell & Meehan Company of Boston , Massachusetts sold these vehicles as Sterling in 1901 .
In 1901 a reorganization led to the Automotor Company .

The prototype from 1896 had a purchased gasoline engine from American and a self-made gearbox. The New Haven Carriage Company made the body.
A few more vehicles followed until 1899.
Brand name Meteor
The only model offered was a two-seat runabout . The single-cylinder engine installed in the front came from De Dion-Bouton or Aster . It delivered 3 to 4 bhp (2.2 to 2.9 kW). It drove the rear axle with a long chain without an interposed gearbox. The price of the very basic automobile ranged from $ 800 to $ 850 . In November 1900, the car was shown in Madison Square Garden in New York City .
