Elgin Sewing Machine and Bicycle Company was an American company.

Company history

The Elgin , Illinois company originally made sewing machines. In 1896 a storm destroyed part of the factory. In 1899 it also manufactured automobiles . The own brand name was Elgin . Vehicles were also built for the American Electric Vehicle Company from Chicago . At the end of 1899 the company was dissolved.

There was no connection with Elgin Motors , which a few years later also manufactured Elgin vehicles.

Electric cars were on offer . At a speed of 13 km / h, a range of 120 km was guaranteed. The original price was 1,200 US dollars . A total of five vehicles with its own brand name were created, of which Montgomery Ward bought two pieces.
