Hertel from 1898

Oakman Motor Vehicle Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Max Hertel was an engineer. He intended to take part in the Chicago Times-Herald Contest in 1895 with a vehicle he had developed . Damage occurred on the approach, which prevented participation. He then founded the company in Greenfield , Massachusetts . The series production of automobiles began in 1899. The brand name was Hertel . The sales figures remained low. Financial problems arose. The company was closed on November 8, 1900.

vehicles

The vehicle from 1895 was the smallest with a gasoline engine that was on the registration list. A self-made two-cylinder engine with 2 HP power drove the rear axle. The two front wheels were guided in bicycle forks . The body of the open runabout offered space for two people. The curb weight was about 227 kg.

A new price of 750 US dollars has been handed down for the series version . One source suggests that the vehicle was too primitive even for the time.
