Herschell-Spillman Inc. , previously the Armitage Herschell Company , was a US company.

Company history

Armitage Herschell Company was founded in North Tonawanda , New York State , in 1880 . It made carousels . In 1892 one was created daily. Around 1900 the name was changed to Herschell-Spillman Inc. Partners were Allan Herschell and Edward Spillman.

At the end of 1900 it was announced that it would enter the automobile business. The first vehicle was built in 1901. The brand name was Herschell-Spillman . Production initially ran until the end of 1904. From 1905 the company concentrated on the manufacture of gasoline engines , which found many customers. The last motor vehicle was built in 1907 . As far as we know, there were four in all.

The far more important engine production ran until 1923. Carousels were made until the early 1960s.

The vehicle from 1904 had a four-cylinder engine with 18 hp . The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a chain. Construction was a tonneau .

The vehicle from 1907 had a 60 hp engine and was bodied as a touring car.
