Sperry Engineering Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .
Company history
Elmer Ambrose Sperry founded the company in Cleveland , Ohio in 1898 . He designed an electric car that was ready in October 1898. The Cleveland Machine Screw Company from the same town took over the production for him. The brand name was initially Cleveland or in long form Cleveland, Sperry System and from 1900 Sperry . Production ended in 1901. Over 100 vehicles were exported to France alone .

Only electric cars were on offer. It was driven by an electric motor with 3.5 hp . A top speed of 29 km / h was specified. Open and closed bodies for two and four people were available. Unusual was the operation with a single lever, which many competitors of electric cars later took over.
Existing vehicles
A Cleveland from 1899 is in an Italian museum. It bears a badge with the inscription Modèle A No. 20 and Boulevard Haussmann, Paris , so it comes from the series of 100 vehicles that were exported to France.
A 1900 Cleveland was Irish NI 3 and took part in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run several times . The Bonhams auction house auctioned the vehicle on October 31, 2014 for 58,734 euros .
A 1901 Sperry is in the Streetlife Museum of Transport in Kingston upon Hull , England .
