Steam Vehicle Company of America was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Irvin D. Lengel had already made a steam car in 1900 . In 1901 he founded the company in Reading , Pennsylvania . He started with the production of automobiles. The brand name was Reading , possibly with the addition of Steamer . Production ended in 1902. The company went bankrupt . One source suspects that too large an assortment was responsible for the downfall.

The Meteor Engineering Company moved into the plant and saw itself as the successor company. Lengel was still involved.

vehicles

Only steam cars were on offer. Many had a steam engine with two cylinders , as was common in the USA at the time. But there were also vehicles with four-cylinder engines . The motors were mounted under the seat and drove the rear axle via a chain. Was steered with a steering lever.

For 1901, the Stanhope and Runabout designs have been handed down. There was also a delivery truck .

In 1902 the individual body shapes were given different model names. Style E was a Stanhope, Style F a dos-à-dos , Style G a Surrey , Style H a touring car , Style J a light delivery van, Style K a delivery van and Style L a touring car as dos-à-dos.
