Swan Manufacturing Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles . Another source names the name Swan Electric Company .

Company history

William J. Swan was an electrician based in Middletown , Connecticut . There he made a prototype in 1903 . He was looking for donors. In early 1904 he founded the company in Hartford , Connecticut, together with ZE Dowd and Frank H. Harriman . A second source confirms the establishment in 1904. In the same year the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Swan . Motors, machines, electrical equipment and accessories for vehicles were also planned. Production ended in 1904.

The prototype had a single cylinder engine with air cooling . It made 5 hp and drove the rear axle via a cardan shaft . Was steered with a steering wheel . The setup was a runabout . The original price was 450 US dollars , respectively.

The series models also had a gasoline engine .
