National Sewing Machine Company was an American company.

Company history

The company was based in Belvidere , Illinois . It manufactured sewing machines from 1886 . In 1894 bicycles were added called Belvidere . From 1901 there was a contract with Oscar Friedman of the Friedman Automobile Company for the production of motor vehicles for him. In April 1903 Friedman filed a lawsuit because delivery was no longer possible. From 1903 onwards the company produced its own automobiles , which were marketed as Eldredge . B. Eldredge was the company's president at the time. In 1906, car production ended after around 300 vehicles.

In 1953 there was a merger with the Free Sewing Machine Company and in 1957 the company was dissolved.

Motor vehicles

The vehicles were similar to the model for Friedman. They had a two-cylinder engine . The engine output was initially given as 8 HP and in 1906 with 10 HP. The engine was mounted under the seat and drove the rear axle via a chain. The chassis had a wheelbase of 173 cm . The open structure as a runabout offered space for two people. It was initially steered with a steering lever and from 1905 on with a steering wheel . Both control elements were arranged on the left. So it was an early left-hand drive issue .
