Greenfield Bus Body Company , formerly CR Patterson, Son & Company and CR Patterson & Sons Company , was an American manufacturer of vehicles .

Company history

Charles Richard Patterson was born a slave in Virginia in 1833 and moved to Greenfield , Ohio as a free man in 1865 . At first he worked as a blacksmith . In 1893 he founded CR Patterson, Son & Company to manufacture coaches . In 1897 it became the CR Patterson & Sons Company . His son Fred experimented with automobiles from 1902 . Automobile production did not begin until 1916. The brand name was Patterson-Greenfield . As far as is known, it was the only American automaker to be made by an African American . Motor vehicle production ended in 1919. A total of between 30 and 150 passenger cars were built . According to a source, a vehicle still exists.

Then the company manufactured bodies for commercial vehicles. In 1921 the name was changed to Greenfield Bus Body Company . Fred Patterson Jr. ran the company. It was dissolved in 1938.

In 1938 there was a reorganization as the Gallia Body Company in Gallipolis , Ohio, which only existed until 1939.

Only one car model was on offer. It had a four-cylinder engine from the Continental Motors Company . It made 30 hp . The choice was between touring cars and roadsters . The original price was around 850 US dollars .
