Company history

JB Bartholomew was a peanut manufacturer and coffee roaster from Peoria , Illinois . In 1901 he began developing automobiles. The brand name was initially Bartholomew . vehicles

As early as 1901, Bartholomew had designed a small, gasoline-powered car with a single-cylinder engine . The small, two-seater runabout was given the model name Glidemobile in 1903 and was mass- produced. From 1904 the 8 bhp (5.9 kW) vehicle was only called Glide .

In addition to these cars, mobile, motorized peanut roasters and popcorn machines were created for use at festivals and exhibitions. In 1905, the Glide was praised in the Automobile Review as the first passenger car whose engine was suspended in the chassis so that the vibrations were not transmitted to the chassis and body. In the same year, Bartholomew built his own two-cylinder engines into his vehicles.

In the following year the first four-cylinder engine and in 1907 the first six-cylinder engine , both supplied by the Rutenber Motor Company . In 1908 production reached its peak with 200 automobiles a year. From 1916 there were only six-cylinder engines. The carburetors were supplied by Wheeler-Schebler .

In 1920 the last Glide was created, the model 40 with 45 bhp (33 kW), as a five-seat touring car or four-seat roadster .
