Shawmut Motor Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was founded in 1905 in Stoneham , Massachusetts . The factory of the Phelps Motor Vehicle Company was moved into. Elliot Lee was president. In 1906 the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Shawmut . In November 1908 a fire destroyed the plant and ten finished and other partially assembled vehicles. Production ended with that. Planned moves to South Boston or Fitchburg failed.

In 1909 another vehicle was used in a car race. It ran from New York City to Seattle . The vehicle took second place. Arthur Pettengill and Robert Messer were the official drivers. Earle Chapin accompanied them.

All vehicles had a four-cylinder engine . 120.65 mm bore and 139.7 mm stroke resulted in 6388 cc displacement . The engine developed 40 hp . It drove the rear axle via a four-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft .

When Model A had chassis 300 cm wheelbase . It was bodied as a roadster .

The Model B with 284 cm wheelbase was an open touring car .

Model C as a sedan and Model D as a landaulet had a uniform 320 cm wheelbase.
