Harroun Motors Corporation was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Former racing driver and first Indy 500 winner Ray Harroun designed a vehicle in 1917. On September 14, 1917, he founded the company in Wayne , Michigan . John Guy Moniham became president. They began producing automobiles at the former Prouty & Glass Carriage Company facility. The brand name was Harroun . In addition, work began on its own plant, which should have an annual capacity of 24,000 vehicles. Around 500 vehicles were built by April 1918.

Then came a major government order to manufacture ammunition . The company invested heavily in production facilities. After the end of World War I , the state paid late, which created problems. Bankruptcy followed in June 1922 .

According to a source, around 1000 vehicles were built, with production being said to have ceased between April 1918 and 1921. Another source gives annual production figures for each year from 1917 to 1922, which add up to 1135 vehicles.

vehicles

Harroun had developed a four-cylinder engine with OHV valve control . It was rated at 16.9 hp, but made 43  hp . It drove the rear axle via a three-speed gearbox.

The first model, Model A-1 , was available from 1917 to 1918. The chassis had a 272 cm wheelbase . There was a choice of three- and five-seat roadsters and a five-seat sedan .

Model 18 followed between 1919 and 1921 with the same dates. The bodies were now a five-seat touring car and a three-seat military roadster.

In 1922 the revised model AA-2 followed . The engine output had been reduced to 41 hp. The wheelbase was only 269 cm. The vehicles were bodied as touring cars with five seats.

A surviving vehicle from 1918 was auctioned for $ 33,000 in 2019 .
