history

House where Johnny Cash grew up

In May 1934, the " Colonization Project No. 1 " was founded in southwest Mississippi County and named the place after the director of the Arkansas Emergency Relief Administration William Reynolds Dyess. The project gave tenants the opportunity to buy the land they manage. The settlement was laid out in a wagon wheel construction, with a community center at the hub and farms extending from the center. There were 500 small farmhouses, each with five rooms and an adjoining barn and chicken coop. The houses were made of whitewashed facades in weatherboarding ( clapboard ), each with two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a dining room and a front and back porch. The colony offered shelter and work to many impoverished people who longed for a better life. One such family was that of Raymond and Carrie Cash, who moved there from Kingsland with their children in 1935 . Her son JR, who would later become known worldwide as Johnny Cash , was only three years old when the family arrived in Dyess. He left the ward after graduating from high school in 1950.

The former Cash house has been restored and is open to visitors. It is set up as it was when the Cash family (father, mother and seven children, some of whom were born in Dyess) lived there.
