Osceola is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River and is adjacent to Blytheville one of two administrative headquarters of Mississippi County in the northeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Arkansas with 8,875 inhabitants.

Osceola is 35 ° 42'08 "north latitude and 89 ° 58'33" west longitude. The city extends over 20.2 km², which consists exclusively of land.

Osceola is located on the western bank of the Mississippi River, which forms the border between the states of Arkansas and Tennessee .

US Highway 61 runs through the city, from which Arkansas State Route 140 branches off to the west. 5km west of Osceola runs of Chicago through St. Louis and Memphis to New Orleans leading Interstate 55 .

Osceola is 22 miles south of the state line between Arkansas and Missouri and 55 miles north of the city of Memphis, Tennessee. Little Rock , the capital of Arkansas, is 150 miles to the southwest.

history

Osceola was founded as Plum Point in 1837 and was the original county seat. Osceola has shared this role with Blytheville since 1901. The site is home to a neoclassical courthouse that is adjacent to the Hale Avenue Historic District . The Mississippi Conty Historical Center is located in a 1904 building that once served as a department store.

Osceola is known for its role in creating the blues . Many well-known musicians came from Osceola or performed there. The Osceola Heritage Festival has been celebrated on Main Street Osceola since 1998 .

In the 2010 census, the population was 7,757. These were distributed over 2,950 households in 1,953 families. The population density was around 400 / km 2 .

The population in 2000 was 47.39% white , 51.03% African American , 0.25% Asian , 0.10% Native American and 0.88% other. 0.82% said they came from at least two of these groups. 1.34% of the population was Hispanic from any of the above groups.

32.2% were under 18 years of age, 11.0% between 18 and 24, 26.4% between 25 and 44, 19.3% between 45 and 64 and 11.1% 65 and older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 90.2 men, among those over 18 years of age 82.9.

The median income per household was $ 23,163 and the median family income was $ 26,588. The average income for men was $ 27,526 and that for women was $ 18,788. The per capita income was $ 12,406. Around 26.0% of families and 29.5% of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
