Burns Brothers , short for WE Burns and Brothers Carriage Works , was an American manufacturer of carriages and automobiles .

Company history

Walter Elsworth Burns founded the carriage manufacturing company in 1896. His brothers Reese, Alfred, Charles and Jonathan later also joined the company. The seat was in Havre de Grace , Maryland . In addition, automobiles were made between 1908 and 1912. They were marketed as Burns . Sales remained low, which according to a source could be due to the fact that the products did not fit the sales market. The company survived the first decades of the 20th century. The year of dissolution is not known.

vehicles

First highwheelers emerged . With the large tires, the vehicles were well suited for the bad roads of the time, especially in the western United States. However, Maryland is in the east, where highwheelers were little in demand. It was not until 1912 that the vehicles were adjusted and made lower.

From 1908 and 1909 there was a model with an air-cooled two-cylinder engine and 16 hp . The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a friction gear and two chains. The wheelbase was 229 cm. There was a choice of bodies as high-wheeled buggy and two-seater transformable coupé .

In 1910 the wheelbase was lengthened to 244 cm. In the buggy, the engine now developed 14 hp. The coupe , on the other hand, had a four-cylinder engine that was specified with 18/20 hp.

From 1911, only two-cylinder models were available as transformable coupes in the range. In that year the engine made 12 hp. The chassis still had a wheelbase of 244 cm.

In 1912, the engine output was increased to 15 hp and the wheelbase was extended to 254 cm.
