British Napier Motor Company , previously the Napier Motor Company of America and American Napier Company , was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The Napier Motor Company of America from Boston , Massachusetts initially imported Napier & Son vehicles from England . At the end of 1904 the production of automobiles began under license from Napier. The brand name was American Napier . In mid-1905, production was relocated to a large plant in the Jamaica Plain district . In early 1905 there were problems because the 200 workers went on strike. In April 1907 financial problems arose which were resolved in June 1907. At that time, production was suspended. The company now operated as the American Napier Company and continued production from March 1909. After about a year, production stopped again before the British Napier Motor Company continued in 1911. Production ended in 1912.

From 1904 to 1907 there were five models. The Nike had a four-cylinder engine with 18  hp and a 229 cm wheelbase . It was the only model available from the factory with a superstructure - as a two-seat runabout . The D-45 model had an equally powerful engine but a 264 cm wheelbase and was only supplied as a chassis . Model H-70 with a four-cylinder engine and 28 hp and model D-50 with four-cylinder engine and 40 hp were more powerful. Top model was the Model L . It had a six-cylinder engine with 30 hp and a wheelbase of 274 cm.

From 1909 to 1910 there were three models in the range. The Nike with a four-cylinder engine, 20 hp and 234 cm wheelbase was available as a two-seater Victoria and two-seater runabout. The Four with a four-cylinder engine, 40 hp and 295 cm wheelbase was available as a Toy Tonneau , Tourabout and Runabout. The Six with a six-cylinder engine, 60 hp and a wheelbase of 320 cm was bodied as a seven-seater touring car.

From 1911 to 1912 the program was reduced to two basic types. The Four was specified with 15/24 hp and usually had a wheelbase of 269 cm. The Model A was a runabout and the Model 6-30 a touring car. The Model B as a touring car, on the other hand, had a wheelbase of 300 cm. The Six with 75 hp had a wheelbase of 340 cm. Model A was available as a landaulet and sedan and the Model 6-50 as a touring car.
