Sterling Automobile & Engine Company , previously the Empire Manufacturing Company and Empire Automobile Company , was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The Empire Manufacturing Company was founded in Sterling , Illinois in 1899 and later renamed the Empire Automobile Company . The production of automobiles began in 1899. The brand name was Empire until 1900 or 1901 . In 1901 the name was changed to Sterling Automobile & Engine Company . From 1901 the vehicles were marketed as sterling . Production ended in 1902.

There was no association with William T. Terwilliger & Company and Empire Automobile Company , which also marketed vehicles as Empire .
